Time for taxpayers to fight back

2010-09-08 00:00

DR SANDY Shaw from Vermont in the United States spoke of a syllogism in his recent article titled “Two Notions of Freedom” which went something like, the people want freedom, the African National Congress brought the people freedom, therefore the ANC is the people.

Well, the ANC did bring initial political freedom but it has taken it away again, and it is most definitely not the people. It only has about 600 000 members, about only 4 000 of whom are apparently directly involved in the ANC policy formation process. Estimates of ANC Youth League membership run at about 550 000 which is alarming because it implies that the youth league could actually be in control of the party’s decision-making structures.

This is why Jackson Mthembu is so desperate to sign on a million new members. Incidentally, the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) has somewhere between 1,5 million and two million ageing members, and the South African Communist Party has fewer than 100 000 members.

This means that the country is “run” by a numerically tiny corrupt and inexperienced cabal, portraying itself as representing the people and cleverly duping the people into voting it back into power through a democratic sham of an election process based primarily on a wit gevaar platform. This also explains why Cosatu is desperately fighting to prove its relevance through striking and intimidation. It also gives some insight into Julius Malema’s resurging and unchallenged blustering, his arrogant attacks on individuals and structures we all thought were protected, and the impotent silence of the president and party.

It also hints at the real reasons behind the ANC’s fear of exposure and the attempts to muzzle the press. Never mind the excellent job the media is doing uncovering the extent and details of the cabal’s gluttonous corruption and gross ineptitude, which incidentally are not protected by the Constitution however much these idiots wish to distort its guarantees of individual freedom to their personal gain. The media is sure to expose more and more the true nature of the crumbling edifice of political and ideological solidarity which was once the all-powerful Tripartite Alliance.

While these playground battles are going on, the economy is crashing around us, the incompetent cadres are hastening its demise, and the people are getting poorer. And the government’s response is to tax and charge the working class more. It is bankrupt of any meaningful strategy to grow the economy and create real jobs. Its tentacles of interference and stupidity have infiltrated all major para-statal institutions, inflating costs of deteriorating services while destroying our children’s heritage.

This is not broad-based black economic empowerment, it is an ever-accelerating weakening and disempowerment of our country. Yes, the ANC is weakening its people, not empowering them. It is introducing new shackles of both political and economic oppression, not freedom.

Enough of this nonsense. It’s time the people who actually run this country and pay for everything took control. The ANC has had enough time to prove that it has served its purpose and its time has passed. I propose a new political party, the South African Workers and Taxayers Party. It will stand on a platform of job creation. It’s about the economy stupid. It’s about productive jobs which do something, make something, provide an honest service for an honest wage. It’s about putting our nation to work. The Workers and Taxpayers Party invites all taxpayers and workers to join, and create a government to serve the people and spend their money wisely. Career politicians and ideologies are out. All other political parties are welcome to join, but more importantly, all contributors to the fiscus are urged to.

Come on South Africa. Rise and shake off the shackles of oppression. Any takers?
