Timing perfect for Hendricks, says coach

CAPE TOWN – Boland rugby player Cornal Hendricks had been thrown into the deep end of the pool by former Sevens coach Paul Treu when he joined the South African Sevens team.

However, he did not drown and proved that he was emotionally and psychologically strong and possessed the necessary perseverance to cope.

On Saturday, Hendricks will make his debut for the Springboks against a World team at Newlands and, according to Treu, the hard work for his former Sevens star starts now.

“He always had the potential,” Treu yesterday told Die Burger, a sister newspaper of The Witness.

“We all knew sevens would not be the end of his rugby career but merely the beginning. He started with us under difficult circumstances because experienced guys such as Cecil Afrika and Kyle Brown had been injured and he was thrown into the deep end.”

Treu, however, said everything had gone well during this trying time and it also served to develop him as a player.

Hendricks had been keen to play Super rugby for the Cheetahs last year but was held back with the sevens for another year during which he was crowned as South Africa’s Sevens Player of the Year.

“If he had gone to the Cheetahs a year earlier, I am not sure he would have been in the same position he finds himself now. At the time we felt he was not quite ready to make the change to the 15-man code.

“The timing was, however, perfect this year because the World Cup will be next year.”
