Tip-off: Mountain Rise police arrest Two men for murder of retired nurse

2011-09-22 00:00

TWO men have been arrested for the recent murder of retired nursing sister Maalthie “Bubbles” Mownchan (64).

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan said that after an appeal for information, members of the Mountain Rise serious crimes unit under the command of Captain Pipes Haffajee followed up on a tip-off that led them to Mageba informal settlement off Ohrtmann Road in Mountain Rise.

Mownchan’s brother, Freddy, welcomed the arrests and said they will await the outcome of the court case. “As a family we’re still trying to get over my sister’s death, which I think we never will.” He said there is a sense of relief and they hope the arrested men will be found guilty and receive the punishment they deserve.

The Witness could not reach Mownchan’s daughter, who was in the house when her mother was stabbed to death at her Samanaville home near Orient Heights on September 6. Freddy said the daughter is doing “fine”.

uMgungundlovu District Mayor Yusuf Bhamjee expressed appreciation on behalf of the community to the investigation team for their efficiency in making the arrest.

The two suspects, aged 19 and 26, will appear in court shortly on charges of murder and robbery.
