Tis the season to be … depressed and tense?

2007-12-08 00:00

According to Expedition Hope, an organisation that raises awareness and support for depression and mental health, “The fully-fledged holiday season can be a wonderful time of joy, parties and family gatherings. But for many people it can also be a time of self-evaluation, loneliness, … reflection on past failures and anxiety about an uncertain future.”

The Mental Health America website, mentalhealthamerica.net, which is about holiday depression and stress, revealed that “many factors can cause the ‘holiday blues’, including stress, fatigue, unrealistic expectations, over-commercialisation, financial constraints and the inability to be with one’s family and friends”.

“The demands of [the holiday season] also contribute to feelings of tension. People may also develop other stress responses such as headaches, excessive drinking, over-eating and difficulty sleeping.”
