Titans’ dismal batting hands victory to Highveld Lions

A DISMAL performance with the bat from the Unlimited Titans gave the Bizhub Highveld Lions an eight-wicket victory before lunch on day three of their Sunfoil Series clash at the Bidvest Wanderers in Johannesburg on Saturday.

Having conceded a first-innings deficit of 65 after being skittled for 147, the Titans resumed day three in disarray at 62 for five, and capitulated to 110 all out with only Farhaan Behardien standing tall with a well-played 63.

It left the Lions requiring just 46 for victory and although they lost two early wickets, captain Stephen Cook (29 not out) saw them safely home for just their second triumph of the campaign.

The victory takes the Lions temporarily to the top of the table with 61,66 points, while the Titans are now languishing in fifth on 46,42.

The procession began as early as the fourth over of the day, when Cliffe Deacon (3 for 30) claimed his third stick after Mangaliso Mosehle edged behind for just three. David Wiese (7) was next to go, as the recalled Brett Pelser (3 for 16) forced another wicket.

When Temba Bavuma (2) edged behind off C.J. de Villiers (1-19), there may have been a slight flutter in the Lions’ change room at 20 for two.

However, Cook made sure any miracles that may have been brewing were quashed, as he coasted his side home after just 9.5 overs.
