Tongaat murder arrests

2011-12-30 00:00

THREE men have been arrested and will appear in court today in connection with the murder of a Tongaat bus owner and his wife.

They have also been charged with armed robbery and the attempted murder of the bus owner’s son.

The three men are charged with the murder of Balaram Reddy and his wife Maliga who were shot dead in their bedroom during the night of December 22. The couple’s son, Nivashin, sustained several stab and gunshot wounds.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said the three, aged 21 to 26, were arrested in the Tongaat area early yesterday morning.

“Police have recovered a knife, two nine millimetre pistols and the suspects’bloodstained clothing.”

Family spokesperson Pastor Rony Naidoo said they were happy that the suspects had been arrested and they hoped this would bring closure.

“Nivashin is doing very well … yesterday he went to remove some stitches, although he is still traumatised …”

Naidoo said the family were trying to get the business back to normal.

Naicker did not want to be drawn on allegations that the murders were partly the result of a clash over bus routes.

He maintained that the motive was robbery.

The three will appear in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court today.
