Top PMB school’s boarding house closed by chickenpox

MERCHISTON Preparatory School’s boarding establishment was closed yesterday due to an outbreak of chickenpox.

The boarding establishment was closed and the boarders were sent home after 30 boys showed signs and symptoms of the contagious illness. Merchiston headmaster Dave Beetar said a day boy arrived at school with chickenpox a few weeks ago and despite the precautions the school took, it was bound to spread as the boys live in close quarters in the boarding house.

“We have taken the necessary precautions and were advised by the Department of Health to send the boarders home and completely sanitise the boarding establishment.”

Beetar said although the outbreak was unfortunate, it had happened just after the pupils had finished their exams and had only two weeks of school left.

“It has not affected us academically,” said Beetar. He added that they had began sanitising the boarding house and would be ready for the boys to return by the end of the Easter holidays.

Vaccination against chickenpox isn’t vital, as almost all children develop immunity after their first infection.
