Top PMB sides cross swords in final

2009-08-14 00:00

IT’S finals night in KZN club rugby today with a number of trophies on offer.

Although the premier silverware up for grabs is the Murray Cup, which sees Moor Cup league champions College Rovers tackle Old Boys in Durban, there is also a much-anticipated crossing of swords between the KZN capital’s top sides — Maritzburg Varsity and PMB Collegians.

The age-old York and Lancaster Cup is the annual piece of silverware that goes to the best team in Pietermaritzburg, and KZN Premier Division Varsity are the defending champions, having beaten First Division Collegians in the 2008 clash at Woodburn.

And while both sides have had seasons that they will look back on as not meeting their expectations — and while Varsity are in a division higher than their arch-PMB rivals — the “Y and L” is a one-off, 80-minute blast in which the team that is hungriest will likely win. It all hangs on this match.

Whatever happened during the season, neither side needs much excuse to be up for this one and supporters can anticipate highly motivated players going into battle for club pride and more. Kick-off is at 7 pm on Woodburn 2.

Down at Durban Varsity, Rovers should have the edge on Old Boys — if only because they are the season’s most consistent team and have the most experience in finals.

Friday — (at Dbn Varsity) Murray Cup final: Rovers vs Old Boys (8 pm). Reserves final: Rovers II vs Old Boys II.

Woodburn 2 — York and Lancaster Cup final: PMB Varsity I vs PMB Collegians I (7.30 pm). Reserves: Varsity II vs Coll II (6 pm).

Woodburn 3 — U20 final: Collegians vs PMB Waratahs (6 pm). Midlands 3rd division final: Collegians III vs Young Lions (7.30 pm).
