Top bowlers head for PMB

The Natal Inland Destination Travel Mixed Fours was completed at the weekend with the section finals being played on Saturday afternoon.

Section one was won by Maureen Lucarne (Collegians), section two by Roy Hickinbotham (West) and section three by Laylon Howard (West).

East Griquland’s Norman Crowe joined the section winners for the semi-finals on Sunday morning, where he went on to beat Roy Hickinbotham, Norma Bloemfield, Arthur Hatton and Carol Hickinbotham (West), while Laylon Howard beat Maureen Lucarne, Graham Henwood, Ann Ramsay and Clive Lucarne. The latter two players were used as substitutes and played all day Saturday and Sunday morning for Peter and Christine Bateson (Collegians).

The final, which was played on Sunday afternoon, was won by Laylon Howard, Nigel Schoefield, Marinda Opperman and Bruce Tarr (West). The silver medal went to Norman Crowe, Roy Keylock, Jean Halgreen and Neil Dodgson (East Griquland).

Bowls South Africa Men’s and Women’s Pairs 2008:

This prestigious event will be staged in Pietermaritzburg next week. Bowlers from throughout the country will be participating. The opening ceremony will be at 8 am on October 23 at Maritzburg Bowling Club, with the finals at Maritzburg on October 26 starting at 8.30 am.

The tournament committee of Bob Radcliffe, Tony Ward, Doug Robinson and Nan Foss have all been working tirelessly to get this event up and running, and have made an appeal to all bowlers to support this event by attending as spectators. Bowls South Africa president Piet Breitenbach, vice president Debra Ferguson and executive member Alan Freeman will also be attending this event.

Natal Inland will be represented by Heather Phelan and Jill McCalgan (Collegians) and Larry Williams and Craig Whitby (also Collegians).These players won the respective pairs championships in the district in the 2007/2008 bowling year. All the names of the players participating from the other districts will be in next week’s column.

The Natal Inland AGM:

This meeting will be held at Wanderers Bowling Club this Saturday morning at 9 am. Johan Barkhuizen will be handing over the reigns as president to Avril Deetlefs. The other nominations received are: Doug Robertson as vice president, Beryl Gandy as secretary, Annette Gouws as treasurer, Beryl Gandy as competition secretary and two executive members in Nan Foss and Cynthia McDuling. There is still one excutive post vacant and nominations will be called from the floor.

Kingfisher Bowling Association:

The annual meeting was held earlier this month. The executive committee was elected with Barbara Gradwell now the president and Charles Stewart her deputy. Kathy Hall is the secretary with Jean Ford as treasurer, Janet and Boy Venter as competition secretaries, and executive members Willem and Heibie Pelser together with new addition Ken Tonge.
