‘Top gear’: festival promises more high-rev thrills at Moses Mabhida this year

2013-02-14 00:00

LAST year, a taxi circled the performance area on two wheels. This year’s Top Gear Festival promises even more action-packed thrills and tricks.

After a successful year — which attracted an attendance of 67 000 and an economic benefit of almost R93 million for KwaZulu-Natal — organisers of the Top Gear Festival in Durban are aiming for over 80 000 people to attend and an even greater benefit for the KwaZulu-Natal economy this year. The extravaganza will consist of stunt shows and other motoring displays.

The festival will take place on June 15 and 16 at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium.

The Durban Street Circuit and People’s Park will also host parts of the event. The festival’s flagship stunt, the deadly 720-degree world record double loop-the-loop performed last year, has been viewed by over 1,4 million people on the Internet, said James Cooke-Priest, the chief operations officer of Top Gear Live.

Tickets for the show range from R250 for a basic ticket to R2 100 for the ultimate package.

Cooke-Priest said the show had generated over R90 million in coverage in the print, online and digital media.
