Top horses to add shine to Golden Horse Casino race

MORE big guns have been tossed into the ring in a bid to capture one of the biggest sprint prizes in South Africa, the R600 000 grade one Golden Horse Casino Sprint to be run at Scottsville Racecourse on Saturday, May 29.

One important name missing from the list of first entries is that of the four-year-old colt, Warm White Night, from the Charles Laird stable, but the country’s champion trainer has rectified that by putting him in as a supplementary entry.

Laird has also supplemented another of his good sprinters, Imperial Gesture, and together with the late entry of Intellectual by Herman Brown, the list of nominations has been boosted to 37.

Laird has nominated his two-year-old, The Assayer, for the Gold Reef Resorts Medallion and Mike de Kock has entered his colt, Sky Marshal, for the same race. Additional entries for the Allan Robertson Championship are Chocolicious from the Herman Brown yard and De Kock’s Australian-bred filly, Mahbooba.

Meanwhile, the former champion sprinter, Mythical Flight, had another outing at Turffontein at the weekend in his comeback programme for the Golden Horse Casino Sprint. Trained by Sean Tarry, Mythical Flight made a bold showing in the recent Computaform Sprint and on Saturday contested a 1 000m sprint where he came on late to finish fourth.

The six-year-old gelding, who was just touched off by Kildonan in this race a couple of years back, finished fourth behind three runners that crossed the line as one. They were led by Mike Azzie’s Vacherin, who was voted two-year-old of the year after the Highveld feature season last year.

The final field for the Golden Horse Casino Sprint will be announced tomorrow at a function at the Golden Horse Casino in Pietermaritzburg. — Witness Reporter.

Golden Horse Casino Sprint Day is a complete entertainment package for the whole family, and bookings for the hospitality marquee or picnic sites can be made through Fay Stuart at 033 345 3405. Val Baxter at the same number will attend to bookings for Rockafella’s Restaurant.
