A series of events have been planned to commemorate World Aids Day today. The day is observed worldwide on December 1.

The main event planned for KwaZulu-Natal will be held at Durban’s Sahara stadium from 11 am.

The World Aids Day event, held under the theme “Stop HIV and Aids: Lead and Unite” will, it is expected, be attended by, among others, Deputy President Baleka Mbethe, also head of the SA National Aids Council (Sanac), Health Minister Barbara Hogan, United Nations executive director on Aids Dr Peter Piot, and Premier S’bu Ndebele.

Various government services including social grant applications, health screenings and processing birth certificates and identity document registrations will also be provided at the stadium.

Ndebele said: “Together we can win and fight against HIV and Aids. We need to stop fighting against each other and unite in our fight against the disease.”

Hogan, Ndebele and other senior government leaders will also visit door-to-door in Cato Crest.

“Join us on this day. Do not wait to be asked, talk to your family, workplace, school or organisation about what you are going to do. Spread the word to act now,” said Sanac.
