Top pupil hopes to add value in SA

A GLENWOOD High School matriculant who scored nine distinctions and has been accepted to study actuarial science, wants to add value to South Africa — literally.

Durban matriculant Kovlin Perumal, who celebrated his 18th birthday in December, has scored possibly his best present yet with a clean sweep of distinctions in all his subjects.

Off to study at the University of Cape Town, the youngster, who plays squash, soccer and badminton, said he would love to work within one of South Africa’s big investment houses and work his way up the ladder.

“My family is here so that is a big draw card, however, I am not limiting myself to where I go. I also have family in Australia but it is where opportunities arise that will determine what I do,” said Perumal.

The former Hillary Primary pupil said the four-year degree he will start this year will be “hectic”.

“Thankfully some of my best friends are joining me in Cape Town where I have no family. Some of them are studying actuarial science like me …

“I worked hard throughout the year to achieve my results. I found this made it easier at the end of the year as I was not stressed,” he said.

Having not been able to secure a private bursary, he said he was hopeful that his marks will qualify him for the UCT bursary scheme.

“I got entrance into UCT on my June results. They will assess my entrance on these matric results. I am looking forward to going to UCT starting in February.”
