TopTV sells all decoder stock

2010-05-04 00:00

THE new pay-TV operator, TopTV, saw its decoders sold out at the weekend. Demand for the new service caused its call centre server to crash yesterday morning.

Melinda Cooper, TopTV publicity and public relations manager, said “the call centre was receiving about 1 500 calls an hour at the weekend”.

“There were also just not enough staff members to handle all the queries,” she added.

The reason for the surge in calls is that once a decoder is bought the new customer must phone the call centre to identify the installers in the area, and because all the stock sold out, there were thousands of new customers who wanted to get the service up and running.

“We are incredibly happy about the response. We will put out more decoder stock by the weekend, and get more people to handle queries” said Cooper.

“The call centre problems have been fixed and the sold-out stock is a small hiccup.”

TopTV’s set-up boxes and satellite dishes are on sale at Pep, Game, Makro, Dion, selected Jumbo Cash & Carry stores, CCW, Brown’s and Weirs, and House & Home.

“Pick n Pay will be on board by the weekend as well,” said Cooper.

The cost for the set-up package is R499, but this is a limited offer. It includes a TopTV decoder (STB), installation, smart card, power supply, male/female RF cable, RCA cable, remote control unit, batteries and an instruction manual for the STB.

“This special price was meant only for the first batch of stock, but because we sold out so quickly we will keep this introductory offer for as long as possible,” said Cooper.
