'Toti Rugby: Minute of silence for victims of cancer

2011-03-09 00:00

THE Amanzimtoti Rugby Club threw their weight behind the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) by donning pink shorts in their pre-season warm-up match against Pinetown at Hutchison Park over the weekend.

The hosts wore their pants with pride as they took to the field after they had participated in the Cansa Shavathon at the Galleria Mall on Saturday morning. Before the match got under way, a minute of silence was held in tribute to those who have lost their lives to cancer.

“’Toti Rugby Club vice-chairman Andre Beetge said the club were eager to get involved with Cansa and added that first team coach, Mark Cameron, was instrumental in initiating the drive.

“Based on the fact that the club and its members are largely representative of the local community, it was considered wise to show appreciation by supporting a cause that in turn affects the entire community,” he said. “It was possibly the easiest project we ever launched, as committee members immediately volunteered to co-ordinate and drive the project to the point where it will now become an annual event on our calendar.”

First team captain Rouche Kleynhans said “every player has been affected by cancer in one way or another” and that it is “a huge honour to be involved in a team with a broader prospective”.
