Toti build on great first season scorecard

2014-05-05 00:00

THE fairytale start to the season for Fidelity Security Premier Division club rugby newcomers Amanzimtoti continues, this after a comprehensive 43-12 win that included seven tries against Zululand Rhinos in Empangeni over the weekend.

Top of the log now, Toti have achieved a bonus point in each of their three matches this season for scoring four tries or more.

Winger Richard Shore and lock forward Pieter Harmse found Mick Kelly Park in Empangeni to their liking, both running in a brace of touchdowns while front-ranker Kevin Buck and loose forward Zander Erasmus, as well as Thinus Volker feature in the tries column. Jaco de Jager succeeded with four conversions.

In second place, just a point behind Toti, are Durban Collegians, who laboured to an untidy 8-7 victory against the young Varsity College outfit on Kings Park 10.

Mynhardt van Schalkwyk (try) and Calvin Sacks (penalty goal) scored the points for Durban Collegians. Exciting winger Michael Cloete confirmed why people are talking about him with a fine try for Varsity College with the Riverside Sports Club-based side’s Armand Peens adding the two points with his boot.

Third-placed College Rovers, plagued by injuries that have tested the enviable depth in their squad to the full, crossed the whitewash seven times against Maritzburg Collegians on the Kings Park 3 rugby field.

Home side Rovers’ 45-0 victory saw six players enjoying the special feeling of try-time, outstanding number 15 Quinton Crocker bagging a brace with the rest going to midfielder Matt Phillips, wing Jared Chiocchetti, back-rower Kirk Twine, replacement Gareth Jenkins, and pivot Jeandre Small who helped himself to a 10-point haul with his trusty place-kicking.

Meanwhile, the buoyant Durban North club, Crusaders, outplayed a below-strength UKZN Impi 54-19 in a match that had been moved to Durban and a Thursday night from its officially scheduled venue of the Varsity Rugby Stadium in the Peter Booysen Sports Park off Golf Road in Scottsville on Saturday afternoon.

College Rovers 45 PMB Collegians 0; Durban Collegians 8 Varsity College 7; UKZN Impi 19 Crusaders 54; Zululand Rhinos 12 Amanzimtoti 43.
