‘Toti toll will strain locals’ pockets’

THE African National Congress leadership in KwaZulu-Natal has reiterated its opposition to the construction of a tollgate in Amanzimtoti, it said yesterday.

In a statement issued after the ANC’s provincial executive meeting (PEC) on Monday night, provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala said the ruling party believes the tollgate will add to the financial burdens of the people of the province.

“The PEC has engaged with Minister of Transport Sbusiso Ndebele directly and is engaging Sanral [South African National Roads Agency Limited] to oppose the construction of the tollgate in Amanzimtoti.

“The ANC is totally unhappy and against the introduction of the proposed tollgate.”

The PEC welcomed a report by the Auditor-General, Terrence Nombembe, which stated that there have been significant improvements in the handling of finances by the KZN government, especially since there are no disclaimers or adverse opinions in the 2009/2010 financial year report.

“The PEC acknowledged that KZN became the second province to receive clean audits and it is most commendable,”the statement said.

“The PEC praised the cost-cutting measures that were implemented by the government during the financial meltdown period, which has contributed in saving and addressing the challenges of over-expenditure.”

The meeting also condemned the brutal killings in the province last week, which saw six people murdered in Ntshongweni and four in Tshelimnyama near Marianhill.
