THE national departments of tourism and water and environmental affairs and Eskom have embarked on roadshows to promote resource efficiency in Port Shepstone.
The roadshows will educate owners of tourism facilities about the importance of using available natural resources, such as water and energy, as optimally and efficiently as possible.
The department’s Lizzy Suping said the roadshows will take place today at the Margate Hotel.
Suping pointed out that South Africa is rich in natural resources and tourism is dependent on these assets for its continued existence.
“The White Paper on responsible tourism requires the sector to promote responsible tourism practices with a view to maximise economic, social and environmental benefits, thus minimising costs to destination while improving local economies”.
Suping said participants in the roadshows will have the opportunity to learn more about resource-saving measures and those who comply with the energy saving requirements will be encouraged to save more.
“The focus of the roadshows will be on the green economy, waste management in tourism, water conservation, demand management, energy efficiency in tourism, universal accessibility and climate change,” Suping said.
