Tourism boost for Polokwane

2007-12-17 00:00

Driving through Polokwane one is immediately struck by the number of guest houses and lodges in the city. Mayor Thabo Makunyane said this has been part of the preparation for the ANC national conference and also for the 2010 Soccer World Cup, when Polokwane will be a host city.

The manager of the guesthouse proudly announced that my room had only been completed early Saturday. When I switched on the air conditioner, the power went off. Easily remedied, said manager Jacques. Not so easy was fixing my door lock. So I slept in an unlocked room, consoled by the fact that a fellow guest is Deputy Minister of Safety and Security Susan Shabangu and her entourage.

Lulama Tshabalala of Limpopo Tourism and Parks said that beds within a 50-km radius of the conference are fully booked and people have booked in other towns further afield, like Mokopane, Tzaneen and Magoebaskloof.
