THE popular, annual Parklane Superspar First Team Hockey Tournament, which swerves as ideal preparation for the upcoming KZN Inland Girls’ U18 A League season, sponsored by the same company, takes place on Saturday at St John’s and St Charles.

Charmaine Koekemoer, chairperson of Umgungundlovu Girls’ Hockey, told The Witness that the 12 first teams would get an ideal chance to test their fitness and combinations at this early stage of the season.

“This tournament is a great help as it assists the teams and their coaches in assessing where they are in terms of gelling as unit,” she said. “Players and teams are always a bit rusty coming back from the off-season, but a number of the girls have been playing indoor hockey in the summer and should find it relatively easy to adapt.”

Koekemoer said that the matches will be 25 minutes one way, and there will be no break between games, so teams would have to be on their toes, while the nonstop action also makes for a spectator-friendly tournament.

The teams are divided into two pools and they will swop venues midway through the day.

The two pools consist of Girls’ High, Carter, Voortrekker, Treverton, St Patricks and Grace College in Pool A with St John’s, The Wykeham Collegiate, Epworth, Howick, KingEdward and Middelburg making up pool B.

The matches take place at both venues from 8.30 am with the final at 4 pm at St John’s. This will be followed by the prize giving and closing function in the St John’s Sports Centre.
