Tournament provides ideal platform to get match-fit

THE Joy Watt tournament interdistrict schoolgirls’ hockey tournament took place over the weekend in Pietermaritzburg.

There were 12 teams in the U16 tournament and 10 teams in the U18 tournament.

“Umlazi and Pinetown chose not to use their provincial players in this tournament this year, as they felt it was too close to the national tournaments. However, Umgungundlovu and KZN Inland coach Devon van der Merwe felt that the tournament provided an ideal platform for players to get match-fit and get used to a tournament environment,” said KwaZulu-Natal Schools’ Hockey chairperson Charmaine Koekemoer, who is also the director of sport at Voortrekker.

The Umgungundlovu teams had outstanding tournaments and the Umgungundlovu U18A team and U16A teams won all their matches as follows:

U18A: beat Pinetown 3-0, Sisonke 4-0, Umgungundlovu B 4-1, Umlazi 9-0.

U16A: beat Empangeni 5-0, Pinetown 6-0, Umgungundlovu B 4-0, Umlazi 3-0, Ugu 9-0.

“Bongani Zuma from the Department of Education has been instrumental in securing funding for this tournament,” said Koekemoer.

“The District DoE provided accommodation and meals for the travelling district teams and the provincial DoE assisted with the cost of the use of the artificial surfaces, medical services and equipment.

“The tournament would not have been such a success without the partnership with the Department of Education,” Koekemoer said.
