Town Hill repair traffic fears

2015-03-24 00:00

THE partial collapse of the road on Town Hill’s southbound carriageway is unlikely to be repaired before the Easter weekend.

With one lane closed, the influx of holiday makers on the main route into the province is likely to cause lengthy delays.

A portion of road collapsed on Thursday last week.

South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) spokesperson Ravi Ronny said the hole was not a sinkhole, but had been caused by a “steel pipe that caved in resulting in the collapse of the pavement layers”.

Road Traffic Inspectorate spokesperson Zinhle Mngomezulu said that work had started on the hole, but, engineers had said the repairs would take “a few weeks”.

Mngomezulu said there was uncertainty whether the fast lane would be open for the Easter weekend but stressed that engineers were working hard to fix the hole as quickly as possible.
