Townhill staff demand action against ‘incompetent’ management

2008-05-21 00:00

DISGRUNTLED staff members at a psychiatric hospital have given hospital management an ultimatum to rectify the problem of lack of resources. Townhill hospital nurses and general staff marched into the hospital administration offices yesterday to hand over a memorandum of demands.

Following The Witness expose about the shortage of supplies at Northdale Hospital it emerged that a similar situation persists at Townhill. Members of Hospersa, PSA and Nehawu accused management of being “arrogant and incompetent”.

In a memorandum delivered to management, workers said the situation has been deteriorating over the past three years. “The unavailability of resources compromises patients’ care and rights. The conditions are far below the standard set for a health care facility.”

It is alleged that some wards have no hand basins, and there is insufficient clothing, such as underwear for male patients. It is alleged that candles are used during load-shedding periods, putting patients at risk.

Workers allege management has ignored staff complaints. “There is complete disregard of issues brought up by staff. Clinical orderlies have requested uniforms to no avail”.

According to staff, complaints have been ignored. “We demand an urgent forensic audit into the hospital’s financial status for in the past three years … [and] that the department remove management as the service standards have grossly deteriorated.”
