Toxic mushrooms: coffins and costs donated for family’s funeral

2012-09-27 00:00

A MASS funeral has been planned for the five people who died after eating a meal of poisonous mushrooms.

Councillor Sibongiseni Mkhize, who has been assisting the surviving family members, said eThekwini Municipality would hold a memorial ceremony at the FNB stadium in Clermont at 9 am on Sunday. He said five mortuaries had agreed to donate coffins and cover the costs of other funeral expenses.

Bheki Mkhize (29), his sisters Nozipho (24) and Nombulelo (22), nephew Emihle (one) and his girlfriend Xoli Buthelezi (31) died in the course of five days last week.

On Tuesday they had eaten curried mushrooms picked in the wild by Bheki. The fungi turned out to be highly toxic, although the exact species is unknown.

Post-mortems were being conducted yesterday and officials are hoping the toxicology results may offer some answers.
