Traffic cop killed, weapons stolen

A TRAFFIC officer died in hospital last night after he was shot in the chest during a suspected ordered attack in Newlands East yesterday.

Mzwandile Dingaan was taken to the Netcare Umhlanga Hospital after paramedics stabilised him at the scene.

Dingaan and another officer had been stationed on Dumisani Makhaya Street near a bus shelter when they were attacked by several men.

The officer was felled by a shot to the chest before both were stripped of their service pistols — thought to be the motive for the shooting.

Their assailants then fled into the KwaMashu Men’s Hostel nearby, a notorious hub of criminal activity and an unofficial “no-go” area for police.

Dingaan writhed in pain as he lay in a pool of blood while medics stripped his uniform off in an effort to quell his bleeding.

While medics battled to stabilise the officer, police officers from across Durban descended on the scene and began searching for the gunmen.

Netcare911 spokesperson Chris Botha said that paramedics had raced to the shooting.

“Advanced life support paramedic Gary Paul received the report of the shooting and immediately responded to the incident with a team of medics. When they arrived they found the officer lying on the ground in a very critical condition,” he said. “After he was placed on a ventilator they transported him to a hospital in Umhlanga for the specialised care that he required,” Botha said.
