Traffic officer gunman hands himself over

2010-05-04 00:00

A PIETERMARITZBURG traffic officer, who recently shot his wife three times in the face, handed himself over to the police yesterday morning.

The Witness understands that the traffic officer, who works for the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), was taken to a doctor after being charged with attempted murder.

It is understood that he was not feeling well, and is apparently suffering from depression.

RTI spokesperson Zinhle Mngomezulu said the man, whose 28-year-old wife is recovering in hospital, was taken by his supervisor to a police station. She could not disclose the police station.

“After being charged he was released to his doctors because he was not feeling well,” Mngomezulu said.

The incident happened at the couple’s home in Oribi village on April 29.

The traffic officer shot his wife three times in the face and once in the arm in the presence of his mother-in-law and a six-year-old boy, who is believed to be the couple’s son.

The traffic officer is believed to have used his service pistol in the shooting. He then disappeared, and the police launched a manhunt to track him down.

Mngomezulu said she believes the man will appear in court in Pietermaritzburg today.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane could only say that “a person was arrested” in connection with the matter.
