Trans-Africa aid trek to Gaza planned

2011-05-09 00:00

THERE will be an historic crossing by a land-based humanitarian relief convoy in June that will journey from Cape Town to Israeli-occupied Gaza in Palestine.

The convoy is part of an international initiative to raise awareness of the plight of the people of Gaza who are living under siege. Known as the Africa 1 Aid Convoy, it will pass through Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Sudan, Egypt and finally Gaza, taking much needed aid.

There are a number of fundraising initiatives on the go and support has come from civil society organisations and charities.

The convoy aims to gather support and spread awareness about the plight of the Palestinian people.

Aid will also be distributed to local people as the convoy moves through Africa.

Goods that will be taken include electrical generators, medical supplies, water detoxification units, educational material and left-hand-drive vehicles.

All of the aid will be shipped to Egypt.

The convoy of 4x4 vehicles will travel through Africa and connect with the aid containers in Egypt and take the containers into Gaza by road.

Another aim of the team travelling in the convoy will be to plant one million olive trees in the occupied territory.
