Transforming the sequel

2009-06-19 00:00

THIS weekend Pietermaritzburg’s cinemas will be offering you a choice — sci-fi battles in Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen, the problems experienced by four guys when their stag party in Las Vegas goes awry in The Hangover, and the problems experienced by a mental patient in the ghostly tale, The Univited.

All three films open this weekend — but it goes without saying that Transformers will most probably be the big drawcard.

In this sequel to the 2007 film — which can be seen at SterKinekor Scottsville — the battle for Earth has ended, but the battle for the universe has just begun.

The Decepticon forces return to Earth on a mission to take Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) prisoner, after the young hero learns the truth about the ancient origins of the Transformers.

Joining the mission to protect humankind is Optimus Prime, who forms an alliance with international armies for a second epic battle.

CineCentre will be showing a preview of Transformers 2 on June 23. The Midlands Mall venue is also screening The Hangover , a comedy from director Todd Phillips about a bachelor party gone horribly wrong.

Two days before his wedding, Doug (Justin Bartha) and his three buddies (Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis) drive to Las Vegas for a blow-out night they’ll never forget. But when the three groomsmen wake up the next morning with pounding headaches, they can’t remember a thing. Their posh hotel suite is trashed and the groom is nowhere to be found.

With no clue about what happened and little time to spare, the trio must retrace their steps to figure out where things went wrong and get Doug back to LA for his wedding.

The comedy has done really well overseas, taking top spot at the U.S. box office in its opening weekend.

The final new film of the weekend, which can be seen at NuMetro Cascades, is The Univited, which tells the story of Anna Rydell (Emily Browning) who returns home after a stint in a mental hospital.

We learn that Anna recently has lost her invalid mother in a fire, causing her breakdown. Once she gets home, however, she begins seeing ghostly apparitions and it seems her recovery could be jeopardised.
