Transport: Getting pupils to school

2012-01-11 00:00

THE KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport said they are leaving nothing to chance but will make sure that pupils arrive safely on their first day at school this morning.

The department’s spokesperson, Kwanele Ncalane said they are holding roadblocks and checks for unroadworthy vehicles that transport pupils. He cautioned transport owners who are reckless with youngsters’ lives.

“Some drivers act like they’re carrying bags of potatoes while they’re transporting lives that are important and valuable. The children are our future and we must prioritise their safety”.

The department has also adopted a programme where they recruit and train community members to help pupils cross the roads especially where there are no speed humps or robots.

The “learner transport” that is intended for pupils who walk long distances to and from school is still in the tender process stage but is expected to “kick off soon”.

Ncalane said they are not expecting major challenges on the roads except for heavy traffic.
