Treverton post-matrics’ Tugela expedition

2009-11-23 00:00

LAST Thursday Treverton College post-matrics completed a 14-day expedition from the source of the Tugela River to its mouth.

Six girls and seven boys took part in this 502 kilometre trip, which was described as life changing.

Marketing manager at the midlands college, Nikki Morris said it was undertaken using any non-motorized method of travel such as hiking, cycling, swimming, paddling, climbing, abseiling and whitewater rafting.

The students met and interacted with communities and pupils from schools along the Tugela on water issues.

“The objective of the expedition was to create an awareness of the environmental issues surrounding water in South Africa. It was aimed at the public but more specifically at those communities most impacted on by environmental issues along the Tugela,” Morris said.

The Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) was requested to establish an environmental teaching and environmental research component to this project.

The trust assisted the group to develop an action-based, visual environmental education programme which was presented at schools along the route. The group highlighted the importance of clean water as a precious commodity and the need to conserve and use it on a sustainable basis.

In addition to analysing and reporting on water quality the group, in partnership with the EWT, facilitated educational initiatives in the schools visited.

The trip tested the group’s leadership and communication skills as well as strength, fitness and courage on their two week journey to the sea.
