Triumph over adversity

2012-12-29 00:00

IT WAS a case of triumph over adversity for 18-year-old Izelle Geringer from Felixton College in Zululand when she excelled in her IEB exams.

Izelle accomplished eight As, in accounting, Afrikaans, English, life orientation, life science, mathematics, maths paper 3 and visual art, a target she had set.

She now looks forward to moving to Stellenbosch University where she will study towards a B.Comm. degree. “All this is dependent on getting bursaries. I have applied to some top accounting companies in the country and hope to hear from them soon.”

Izelle is proof that with hard work, focus and determination, nothing is impossible. She faced heartbreak when her mother died when she was six.

However, that did not derail her and instead gave her impetus to appreciate what she had and work hard to achieve her goals.

She said yesterday that her father and grandmother nurtured her and made her the person she has become.

“My father was a cricket player. He always encouraged us to persevere and to work hard and to never give up … my grandmother kept the home warm. She did everything for us; she cooked, she cleaned and she had enough love to give.

“When we learned of the results, my father had this big smile on his face,” she said.

Her father, Anton, said he was very proud. He described Izelle as a tenacious, focused and hard-working individual who had set out to achieve what she wanted.

“Getting eight As was always her goal and I am very proud of her.”

He said the pain of losing her mother at an early age had shaped her. “If things do not come easy, then you tend to work very hard for them.”

Principal Ken Krige described her as hard-working and tenacious. “She is an outstanding student with a strong work ethic.”
