Truck business back again

2014-03-12 00:00

A CONTROVERSIAL Ashburton truck business ordered by the high court to close its doors in 2009 has raised its head again.

A late application for rezoning added to the agenda of a council meeting held yesterday has re-ignited concerns among residents, who previously won a four-year battle against the United Truck Centre.

The item was stood down till March 25 but Ashburton residents are bracing themselves for another battle. The application is for an amendment of the town planning scheme to rezone the property at 50 Old Main Road, to allow for the establishment of a commercial workshop.

In 2009 the owner of the business, Ayoob Moosa, was compelled by a high court order granted to Msunduzi Municipality to close down and demolish and remove all illegal structures on the property.

An application by his company at the time to have the area rezoned resulted in the municipality receiving more than 130 objections as well as a further two petitions with hundreds of signatures. Municipal representatives who visited the site also objected because of the impact its trucks were having on the road.
