Truck deaths: five killed as brakes fail and truck hits road workers

2010-10-13 00:00

FIVE people, including three construction workers, were killed yesterday when a truck driver lost control of his truck at Babanango in northern Zululand.

Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) spokesperson Zinhle Mngomezulu said three construction workers were killed and another seriously injured. The trucker and his girlfriend were also killed.

“We suspect that the truck had a problem with its brakes,” she said.

The truck was carrying corrugated iron, and emergency services members had their work cut out to extract one of the mangled bodies.

Yesterday’s accident was not the first in KZN in which road workers have been killed.

In March, two road workers were killed on the N3 near Hilton when a truck ran out of control and crashed into a construction site at around midnight. Hours later, another truck hit the same site, where the workers had been sent back to work. One person was killed in each of the accidents.
