Truck driver freed by jaws of life

2008-07-01 00:00

A TRUCK driver spent nearly two hours in agony trapped inside his heavy-duty vehicle which had overturned on the southbound lane of the N3 highway outside Pietermaritzburg yesterday evening.

The driver, whose name could not be established, was trapped for more than an hour between the seats and the left-hand door, with a piece of metal through his leg. The Msunduzi Municipality Fire and Rescue team used the jaws of life to cut part of the truck off to rescue him.

KZN Department of Transport spokeswoman Zinhle Mngomezulu said the driver emerged from the truck with serious injuries. He was taken to Northdale Hospital.

Eyewitnesses who rushed to the scene of the accident said they found him trapped.

“I heard him crying and pleading for help. He said that he was scared he was going to die. We immediately removed a fire extinguisher from the truck in preparation to react in case the truck caught fire,” said Kevin De La Mare, who was among four people first at the accident scene.

The truck, pulling two trailers with two heavy containers, lost control at the bend just after passing Peter Brown offramp.

A Road Traffic Inspectorate officer who was at the scene said that the driver may have lost control because he had been speeding.
