A KWAZULU-NATAL Road Traffic Inspectorate officer is fighting for her life in hospital after she was knocked down by a truck on the N3 south- bound near Townhill yesterday.

Department of Transport spokesperson Zinhle Mngomezulu said the officer was on duty at the time.

The officer had been signalling other motorists about a broken down vehicle at about 9:40 am when she was knocked down by the truck that failed to stop.

Mngomezulu said she sustained serious head and spine injuries.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan said, “One of the officers was reversing the vehicle while the other officer was picking up cones from the left lane … a truck that was unable to divert on to the centre lane ran into the traffic officer who was picking up cones.”

She said a case of reckless and negligent driving has been opened.
