A HEAVY-DUTY trucker opened fire on another trucker on the N3 near Lion’s River in a road rage showdown yesterday morning.
A driver for Freighter Transport truck is fighting for his life at Northdale Hospital after he was shot in the head by a Bakers Transport truck driver.
The trucks were travelling towards Durban.
Near Lion’s River the road narrows to one lane due to road construction, and the two truckers jostled each other trying to get to the single lane first.
Howick police spokesperson Captain Lolley Moodley said both drivers wanted to get ahead and neither gave the other right of way.
“Once the trucks had driven past the site and the second lane had again opened, the trucks gained level ground and drove parallel to each other.
“That’s when the Bakers driver opened fire at the other driver,” said Moodley.
Bakers spokesperson Enver Kader said the company doesn’t have all the facts relating to the incident.
“We’ve heard that the other driver had forced our driver off the road. He then pointed a firearm at our driver which forced him to retaliate by shooting back. However, we still need to investigate the matter and get all the details of the case so that we can take an informed action. At this stage we stand by our driver,” said Kader.
The suspect whose name is withheld was charged with attempted murder and will appear at the Howick Magistrate Court on Monday.
