Truter murder suspect dies awaiting bail

2008-07-15 00:00

One of the four men charged with the murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances of Thistle Hotel manager, Mark Truter (38), on the night of March 25, has died in prison.

The four accused were due to continue with a bail application last week, but the case was postponed until yesterday due to the illness of one of the suspects — Ryder Snothi Ndlovu (21).

Police confirmed yesterday that Ndlovu has since died in the prison hospital of undisclosed causes.

The case was adjourned again until August 7.

Only one accused — Wiseman Vusimuzi Ndlovu (30) — has so far begun giving evidence in support of his bail application. The remaining two accused are; Siphelele Peter Ngubo (28) and Sihle Makhanya (24).

They are charged with Truter’s murder as well as the robbery of R33 000 in cash; a camera and a cellphone.

Truter — who is one of the oldest known survivors of cystic fibrosis (an illness that affects the breathing and digestive system) — reportedly suffocated to death as a result of being gagged with tape which covered his mouth and nose.
