Tshabalala’s invisible BCom

2014-10-30 00:00

CAPE TOWN — New evidence has emerged that SABC board chair Ellen Tshabalala does not have the BCom degree she claims.

The DA engaged the company Managed Integrity Evaluation (MIE) to comb the National Qualifications Register for her degree.

The background check revealed that:

• Tshabalala registered for a BCom at Unisa in 1996.

• Her student number was 0658-212-5.

• She was last registered at Unisa in 1996.

• “The qualification was not completed”.

This accords with a document from Unisa confirming that Tshabalala does not have the degree, which sister papers City Press and Rapport obtained in July following a Public Access to Information Act (PAIA) request.

It could not be confirmed whether Tshabalala possesses the diploma in labour relations that she also claims, as these are not reflected on the register.

DA MP Gavin Davis, who asked the communications portfolio committee to determine if she lied about her qualifications, said he will place the “new evidence” before it.

Tshabalala, who has not produced proof in three months, was granted a court order last Thursday delaying the hearing.

Her legal team asked the court to rule on whether the hearing is an investigation under the Broadcasting Act or a disciplinary hearing.

The case will be heard on Monday.

Davis said it was a pity that Tshabalala was turning to lawyers to delay the process, rather than working with the parliamentary committee. “Evidence is mounting that Mrs Tshabalala lied to Parliament,” he said.
