Tumour: Surgeon to help teen

2008-09-30 00:00

Witness readers have heeded the call to assist an orphaned teenage boy who has a huge tumour in his mouth. A week after The Witness published a story about Sphamandla Mazibuko (18), doctors and individuals in the city extended helping hands.

Local surgeon Dr Johan Ackermans has offered free treatment. “Today I will examine Sphamandla … I have also arranged with Bouwer and Partners [pathologists], who have offered to do the tests free,” Ackermans said.

He added that one of his patients has also offered assistance.

Mazibuko is living with an unemployed foster parent who relied on a grant to care for him. The grant was terminated when he turned 18.

He does not go to school and the Soul Buddyz club is hoping to get him to a special school where he can continue his education.

The Natal Witness has pledged R1 000 towards his education, and marketing manager Dudu Zwane has challenged city businesses to help.

The Witness has made an account available where money can be deposited until a permanent account can be opened. Account name: The Natal Witness; Bank: FNB; Code: 257355; Account No: 50932781492 Reference: Soul Buddyz.

For more details, or to help, call Dudu Zwane at 033 355 1111.
