Tutu: I’d rather Zuma wasn’t the president

2012-09-24 00:00

THE HAGUE — Archbishop Desmond Tutu would rather have seen someone other than Jacob Zuma as president of South Africa.

Tutu made the declaration in an interview with a Dutch television station during a vist to the Netherlands.

Queen Beatrix inducted Tutu into the Dutch Royal Order of Oranje-Nassau in the city of Deventer last Thursday.

In Deventer, he was also a guest on the television programme CollegeTour, in which a presenter and an audience of students ask questions.

On Zuma, Tutu said he knew him as a charming man, and must respect him as president. But he would rather have seen someone else in the job. He did not say who.

Asked if he would like U.S. President Barack Obama re-elected, he said, laughing, “Well, the alternative …” He sharply criticised the Republican challenger, Mitt Romney, calling his remark that 47% of the electorate relied on welfare and therefore would never support him as “unbelievable arrogance”.
