Tweens say soccer is for girls and boys

2009-08-08 00:00

A NATIONAL soccer survey has revealed that although the SA soccer field is traditionally a male stronghold, 88% of SA “tweens” believe that soccer is a sport that should be played by girls and boys.

In the U.S., soccer is just as popular for girls as for boys. In some instances, women soccer stars are better-known than men. Footballer Mia Hamm was listed recently as one of the “most fascinating women in politics” in a political magazine poll.

However, in South Africa, the Spur Soccer Survey revealed that fewer than a third (32%) of schools have an official girls’ soccer team.

The survey also highlighted the most influential soccer stars in respondents’ lives: dads, teachers and coaches. One respondent from KZN comments, ‘The first time I didn’t know what my dad was doing but now I love playing soccer.”
