Tweets of sympathy after Lulu Dikana dies

TWITTER became South Africa’s condolence book after news of soul singer Lulu Dikana’s death struck ­social media channels.

Her recording company ­announced yesterday that she died after a short illness on Wednesday night.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the unexpected and tragic loss of soul songstress Lulu Dikana who passed away last night [Wednesday] after a short illness while being treated in hospital,” Sound African recordings said in a statement on behalf of her family.

“Our deepest condolences go out to her family, friends and all her fans who came to know and love her through her music.”

The KwaZulu-Natal Arts and Culture Department HOD, Sibongile Nzimande, sent condolences to the family of Dikana, who recently opened for John Legend on the Johannesburg leg of his All Of Me Tour.

“We are deeply saddened by the great loss to the music industry and to the thousands of young South ­Africans who drew inspiration from [her],” she said.

Meanwhile, local celebrities and politicians took to Twitter posting their messages of condolence.

Sports Minister Fikile Mbulula sent his condolences in a tweet that read: “We join all SAs in conveying our deepest and heartfelt ­condolences to the Dikana family on passing away of their daughter Lulu Dikana #RIP.”

Radio and television presenter Pabi Moloi tweeted a broken heart emoticon with her message of ­condolence: “Wow… This fleeting life. #RIPLuluDikana”

Xhosa singer and song writer Simphiwe Dana tweeted: “My heart goes out to Lulu Dikana’s family at this difficult time. May she rest in peace.”

Local actress and model ­Boitumelo Thulo tweeted: “Rest in Peace Lulu Dikana. May you have a beautiful journey back home.”
