Twice bitten: Ajax feel used after losing two star players to rivals

2011-08-12 00:00

AJAX Cape Town cannot be faulted for crying foul after being hit below the belt twice in the space of two weeks.

Bidvest Wits snatched away former Bafana Bafana defender Mbulelo Mabizela after the Cape Town side announced they had agreed personal terms with the player, who impressed during a week trial. The scenario resembles that of Benni McCarthy, who, after training with Ajax following a return from Europe, concluded a surprise transfer to Orlando Pirates, leaving the Ajax management gutted.

They went as far as claiming McCarthy used them while weighing up options for his next move.

Wits have given the troublesome, yet talented Mabizela a two-year deal. When asked if he felt it is a risky signing, Wits coach De Sa told “I don’t think so. He’s a free agent so we’re not buying or signing him really. It’s about giving him a chance to play again. He sure is a good player so why not?”

He added that Wits are a bit short in defence. “Derrick [Spencer] is there, but having lost Tefu [Mashamaite], I think we needed someone with experience in the defence.”

De Sa called Mabizela himself and asked him whether he would join the club. Mabizela said, “Make me an offer” and it was done. Mabizela’s last club was Platinum Stars and he has previously turned out for Maritzburg City, Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns, Tottenham Hotspurs and Valeranga.
