Twin brothers in canoe battle

2011-03-01 00:00

GREG Carter-Brown narrowly edged out his twin brother Craig to take the 2011 KZN K1 River title on Sunday in the Corsair Umkomaas Challenge.

The third place was also settled by a sprint with James Speed just ahead of his Maritzburg College team-mate Murray Haw for the U18 title. Andrew Adie from Kearsney College was third in the boys.

Abby Adie took the women’s title from Hillary Pitchford in seventh and ninth place overall. Again the leading junior claimed the third spot, Brittany Petersen of Epworth took the title from school-mate and Unlimited Dusi winner Bianca Haw by seven minutes.

Just over 80 paddlers took part in the race hosted by Umzinyathi Canoe Club in hot, sunny weather with the Umkomaas flowing at around 30 cumecs, or 1,6m, on the Josephines Bridge gauge. Top pre-race seeds for the senior men’s title Ant Stott and Deon Bruss withdrew before the start after a bruising encounter with a rock in No. 1 rapid while tripping the section from Hella-Hella to Sunday’s start at No. 7 Rapid before the race.
