Twin girls survive killer accident

2010-02-03 00:00

SIX-YEAR-OLD twin girls survived an accident in which their mother and three other people were killed.

The accident, involving a Toyota Tazz and a Renault Clio, claimed the lives of four people: the twins’ mother and another woman, her three-year-old son and six-year-old daughter.

The woman’s husband was critically injured when the two vehicles collided on the M4 Leo Boyd Highway near Ballito yesterday afternoon.

Netcare 911 spokesman Jeff Wicks said it is not clear how the accident happened. The cars were thought to be travelling towards Umhlanga, with the Toyota in front. After the collision the Toyota ended up in the middle of the road, while the Renault was in a furrow at the roadside.

The twins, who were in the Renault, sustained serious injuries and their mother died. They were treated and stabilised by Netcare911 Advanced Life Support paramedics before being taken to Umhlanga Hospital.

The driver of the Toyota is the only survivor. His wife and two children died of their injuries at the scene.

He is said to be fighting for his life after being airlifted to Umhlanga Hospital.

Road Traffic Inspectorate spokeswoman Zintle Mngomezulu said the road was temporarily closed after the accident.

She said the cause of the accident could be driver error, speed and failure to observe the correct following distance.

The police are investigating four counts of culpable homicide.
