Twister has experts bemused

FOLLOWING a deluge of comments on social media about the authenticity — or not — of a tornado at Blood River near Vryheid recently, the weather service is also stumped. The office is neither confirming the tornado, nor saying it did not happen.

Forecaster at the South African Weather Service, Wiseman Dlamini, said their weather mapping tools could not confirm if a tornado had occurred there this past weekend.

According to the Vryheid Herald, the tornado on Saturday afternoon was the second one in the area within the same week.

Pictures have surfaced all over popular social networks like Facebook and Twitter, with speculation as to whether they are in fact real.

Most people have replied with shock, with one user saying that it was a “spectacular sight, yet so dangerous”.

There is also a video of the twister doing the rounds on YouTube.

According to an informed source who asked not to be named, no one was injured and there was no damage as the tornado occurred in open fields.
