Two KZN Inland players named in SA Schools team for Colts encounter

2012-12-22 00:00

AT the end of the gala dinner to close the Khaya Majola Week, a South African Schools side and an SA Colts team were named to play against sides from the host union, North West.

In the relatively short history of KZN Inland being a union, they have had their best representation with two players in the SA Schools side and another in the Colts.

Two of these players are from Maritzburg College — Daryn Dupavillon and Sohail Mahmoud — the latter making the Colts XI.

The other is Greg Oldfield of Michaelhouse.

The two strongest sides at the week, Western Province and Gauteng, have four and five players respectively.

King Edward VII in Johannesburg is the school with most players, one in the SA Schools and two in the Colts.

The only other with more than one player is Wynberg with two, one in each side.

Diego Rosier of Noordkaap and Griquas was selected as the captain of the SA School’s side.

It is his reputation that will have helped his selection, as he scored only one half-century in the week.

He was the Player of the Tournament in 2011 and has represented SA U19.

Craig Kirsten of Kearsney was selected for his second time in the SA Schools side.

Shaylen Pillay of King Edward was selected for the first time, but he has also played for the SA U19 team.

There are always some surprises and players who will be disappointed, but the balance of a cricket side is vital, as well as complying with the quotas.

It is not an easy task for the selectors.

The following awards were made before the announcement of the side:

Leading run-scorer: Tian Koekemoer (Merensky-Limpopo).

Leading wicket-taker: Daryn Dupavillon (Maritzburg College-KZN Inland).

Leading all rounder: Shaylen Pillay (KES-Gauteng).
