Two KZN sides set to face challenging encounters

2011-07-23 00:00

AFTER the winter vacation there are just two KZN schools that will continue with rugby — Glenwood and Maritzburg College.

The fitness levels should still be good as most of the players in the two teams were involved in one of the rugby tournaments in the holidays.

College have the daunting task of a repeat fixture against Affies from Pretoria. In the match last term in Pretoria, College were guilty of mistakes from which Affies countered and scored seven tries against one by College, winning 55-7.

If College is to improve today, starting at 3 pm, first-time tackles must be made and handling errors must be minimized.

Although the Pretoria side is said to have one of the biggest forwards packs in the country, there were only three players in the Blue Bulls Craven week team and only one forward, prop Pierre Schoeman.

The much smaller College front-row managed to hold their own so it is up to the other players to raise their game this afternoon.

The other match is at Glenwood at 3.15 pm, where they are playing the Rugby High School All American XV. This is a team that has been assembled from the 96 or more high schools in the USA that play rugby union. On Wednesday afternoon they beat the KZN Development team 77-0, scoring 11 tries.

The Americans have big, strong forwards and fleet-footed backs. This match against Glenwood, arguably the top KZN side, will be a much better test of the Americans’ ability.
