Two KZN stars to take part in World Student Games

2011-08-10 00:00

THIS week South Africa’s team to the World Student Games in China gathered in Johannesburg in preparation for their trip to the Far East where they will compete from August 12 to 23.

In the athletics team are KwaZulu-Natal’s Shane Victor and

Simone du Toit, who will compete in the 400 metre and shot put before flying on to join the SA Senior team in South Korea for the World Athletic Championships.

It is expected that these two athletes will make the final of their events at the student games.

• Situninkosi Ngqoyingile’s strength over the last quarter of the Mtunzini Bush Race secured him victory in the 16 km course.

Ngqoyingile had a mere 40 metre advantage over second-placed Sakhile Mthembu as he powered up the final grass slope in 57 minutes and 32 seconds.

Mthembu added the junior category to his winnings, while Mr Price’s Vusi Cele was over a minute adrift in 58:47.

Not surprisingly the 16 km race, which has around seven kilometres of forest, two kilometres of sand and a mere five kilometres of road running, has grown in popularity and can be considered a substantial contributor to local tourism.

Trail running saw Eberhard Fritsch and Maggie Marshall winning the 70-plus categories in 2:05:10 and 2:09:46 respectively.

South Africa’s leading marathoner, Tanith Maxwell, dominated the ladies’ race.

The women’s marathon is one of the first events of the World Championships and this is the first time that South Africa have fielded a full ladies’ team this century.

Rene Kalmer took the honours in the Stellenbosch leg of the

Totalsports Women’s Day 10 km in 34 minutes and four seconds.

Local athlete Xinie Zintle was second some 200 metres adrift in 34:04, while up in Johannesburg the Totalsports Women’s 10 km around Emmerentia Dam was won by Lebo Phalula in 35 minutes and 50 seconds.

• The only road race in the province this weekend is the Kwamashu half-marathon which starts from Princess Magoga stadium on Sunday at 7 am.

There are also 10 km and five kilometre distance events, but only the five kilometre can be a fun run, with temporary licenes required for the 10 km and half-marathon races.

Walkers are welcome in all distances. M.M. Madlala has more details at 082 708 8150

• Off the road, Canon Richards Bay Athletics Club (RBAC) teams up with Zululand Cycling Club for Sunday’s Kentucky Fried Chicken 12 km trail run from Mondi Sports Complex (Woodpeckers Sport Club) in Richards Bay.

Entries will be taken at the sports club on Saturday from

10 am to 12 pm and on race morning from 6 am.
