Two Oceans: 11?000-Entry limit filling fast

2010-12-24 00:00

ALTHOUGH there are no races on the penultimate weekend of 2010, runners wanting to run in the Old Mutual Two Oceans races would be well advised to use the holiday time to enter the race before the deadline. This is of particular importance for those wishing to run the half marathon which has already seen almost three times as many entries this year as the same time last year. There are only 11 000 places in this popular event which is now attracting local and even international licensed and non-licensed runners.

There seems little question that the entries will close long before the March 16 deadline with many suggesting that the limit might be reached by the first week in January.

The 56 km ultra entries are expected to take slightly longer, but with 18 000 committed to Comrades, more than a few of those runners will be using the Cape event as a qualifier and test for their run on 29 May.

The Two Oceans is held on Saturday 23 April with two trail race options on Friday 22 April. The 10 km beginners route will be predominantly on broad paths through the Newlands forest on the lower slopes of Table Mountain whereas the 22 km climbs from the UCT ground to the viewpoints near Devils Peak. Entries can be found on

Runners can use their 2010 licence number for races in SA until and including January 30, 2011.

This extension is due to the late printing of the licence numbers by Athletics SA. Clubs should be able to collect their new licence numbers from the KZN Athletics Office when they re-open on Wednesday, January 5.
